Kitchen gadgets German LFGB certification process

Date:2026-03-17 09:24:04 Classification :【question】 Visits:
Kitchen gadgets (such as spoons, spatulas, whisks, peelers, scissors, etc.) exported to Germany require LFGB certification, which typically follows a standardized process. The core of LFGB certification is ensuring that the product does not release harmful substances when in contact with food and meets Germany's stringent safety standards.

Step 1: Confirm Product Material and Intended Use

Before applying, specific product information needs to be clarified, as this directly determines the testing items and costs.

Material Confirmation: Kitchen gadgets are made of various materials, such as plastic (PP, ABS, PA66, nylon, etc.), silicone, rubber, stainless steel, wood, ceramic, or glass.

Color and Components: Different colors of the same product, or components made of different materials (e.g., a plastic handle and a metal head), may require separate testing.

Usage Scenarios: It's crucial to specify whether the product will come into contact with room temperature food, hot food, or acidic/alcoholic foods, as this will affect the stringency of the testing conditions.

Step 2: Selecting a Certification Body and Completing the Application

Selecting a Body: Find a third-party testing body with CNAS/CMA accreditation and familiarity with the German LFGB regulations (DEZEW Testing CNAS Registration No.: L8083).

Completing the Application Form: Submit the "LFGB Certification Application Form," which includes applicant information, manufacturer information, product name, model, material list, etc.

Step 3: Sample Preparation and Submission

Prepare samples according to the laboratory's requirements.

Sample Quantity: Usually, 2-3 complete finished product samples are required. For multi-colored products, samples of different colors may be needed to cover all colorants.

Sample Condition: Samples must be in their final finished product state, and surface coatings (such as non-stick coatings, plating) must be intact and undamaged.

Material Declaration: Some laboratories may require a material specification or BOM (Bill of Materials).

Step 4: Laboratory Testing (Core Step)

After receiving the samples, the laboratory will conduct appropriate tests based on the materials. For kitchen gadgets, common testing items include:

1. Sensory Testing

Odor and Flavor Transfer Test: This is the most basic and stringent test by LFGB. The sample is placed in contact with simulated food (such as water or olive oil) to detect any off-odors or flavor transfer to the food.

2. Chemical Migration Test

Heavy Metal Leaching: Detects whether heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, chromium, and nickel exceed the limits (for metal, ceramic, and glass materials).

Comprehensive Migration Test: For plastic and silicone materials, detects whether the total amount of substance migration exceeds the limit.

Specific Substance Tests:

Plastics: Detects formaldehyde, phenol, heavy metals, primary aromatic amines, etc.

Silicone: Detects volatile organic compounds (VOM), peroxide value, etc.

Metals: Detects component analysis and heavy metal release.

3. Other Special Tests

For coated tools (such as non-stick spatulas), coating adhesion and corrosion resistance tests are required.

For wooden tools, a pentachlorophenol (PCP) test is required.

Step 5: Report Draft Confirmation and Rectification

After testing, the laboratory issues a draft report.

Information Verification: The applicant must carefully verify the accuracy of the product name, model, and manufacturer information in the report.

Rectification: If the test fails, the laboratory will notify you of the specific items exceeding the standard. At this point, it is necessary to analyze the cause (e.g., changing raw materials, adjusting the process), and resubmit the sample for testing after rectification (retesting usually only tests the non-compliant items, and the cost is lower).

Step 6: Issuance of Official Report

After confirmation, the laboratory issues an official LFGB test report.

Report Validity: The report is usually valid indefinitely, provided that the product materials, processes, and regulatory standards remain unchanged.

Step 7: Affixing Marks (Optional)

After passing the LFGB test, the product can be affixed with the "knife and fork symbol" on the packaging or the product itself. This is a highly recognized food safety symbol in Germany, helping to enhance product competitiveness.

Processing Time and Cost Estimate

Processing Time: Usually 5-7 working days (calculated from the date of receipt of samples and confirmation of payment). Expedited service can shorten this to approximately 3 working days.

Cost: The cost depends on the type of material and the number of colors. Single-material products (e.g., pure stainless steel spoons) are less expensive; multi-material composites (e.g., silicone + plastic handles) or multi-color products will be more expensive.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid:

1. Material Consistency: The submitted sample must be completely consistent with the materials used in the bulk production. If the plastic supplier or colorant has changed for the bulk production, the original LFGB report may become invalid and retesting will be required.

2. Color Coverage: If the product has multiple colors, it is recommended to specify this in the application. Laboratories usually select darker or brighter colors (higher risk) for testing to cover other colors.

3. Differentiate Between EU and German Standards: The EU standard is EC 1935/2004, but the German LFGB requirements are stricter (especially for sensory testing and certain specific substances). If the target market is clearly Germany, LFGB testing is mandatory; ordinary EU food-grade testing is not sufficient.
