Knife, Fork and Spoon China GB4806 Food Contact Material Testing Report

Date:2026-03-20 10:41:02 Classification :【question】 Visits:
The specific testing items for Chinese GB4806 food contact material testing report for knife, fork and spoon products depend on the material of the product. Different materials correspond to different national standards (GB sub items).

1、 Stainless steel knives, forks, spoons (most common)

Execution standard: GB 4806.9-2016 "National Food Safety Standard - Metallic Materials and Articles in Contact with Food"

This is the core standard for metal tableware, and the main testing items include:

1. Sensory indicators:

Appearance: The surface should be smooth, clean, and free of burrs, cracks, dirt, etc.

Sensory requirements: The soaking solution (simulated solution) must not have any odor, strange smell, turbidity, or sediment.

2. Physical and chemical indicators (heavy metal migration):

This is the core difficulty, simulating the precipitation of heavy metals when tableware comes into contact with acidic or oily food.

Required test items:

Lead migration amount

Chromium migration amount

Nickel migration amount

Cadmium migration amount

Arsenic migration amount

Note: If it is made of stainless steel material, a material analysis report is usually required to prove that it meets the national stainless steel grade standards (such as 304, 316, 430, etc.). Although this belongs to material identification and is not mandatory under GB4806.9, it is often required on e-commerce platforms such as JD.com and Tmall. *

2、 Plastic knives, forks, spoons (such as PP, PS, melamine tableware)

Execution standard: GB 4806.7-2016 "National Food Safety Standard - Plastic Materials and Products for Food Contact"

Commonly found in disposable tableware, children's tableware, or imitation porcelain tableware (melamine).

1. Sensory indicators:

The color, odor, and taste are normal, with no peculiar or foul odors, and the soaking solution is not turbid.

2. Physical and chemical indicators:

Total migration: Simulate the total amount of substance precipitation when in contact with food such as water, oil, and alcohol.

Potassium permanganate consumption: Check for the migration of easily oxidizable small molecules.

Heavy metals (calculated as lead).

Discoloration test: If it is colored tableware, it is necessary to test whether it will fade.

3. Specific substance migration amount (determined by material):

For example, melamine (MF) tableware needs to measure the migration of melamine.

If it is made of polypropylene (PP) material, conventional testing is usually sufficient.

3、 Bamboo and wood knives, forks, spoons

Execution standard: GB 4806.12-2022 "National Food Safety Standard - Bamboo and Wood Materials and Products for Food Contact"

In recent years, bamboo tableware has become very popular, and this project has been updated in 2022 with stricter testing requirements.

1. Sensory indicators:

Surface cleanliness, no insect infestation, no mold, and no odor.

2. Physical and chemical indicators:

Total migration volume.

Formaldehyde migration amount (key, glued bamboo and wood products have high risk).

Sulfur dioxide migration (bleaching process residue).

Pentachlorophenol (preservative, strictly prohibited from detection).

Thiabendazole, o-phenylphenol, and fungicide (preservative and mold inhibitor).

4、 Ceramic knives, forks, spoons

Execution standard: GB 4806.4-2016 "National Food Safety Standard - Ceramic Products"

Mainly targeting ceramic handles or spoons.

1. Sensory indicators: no abnormal odor, no turbidity in the soaking solution.

2. Physical and chemical indicators:

Lead migration amount.

Cadmium migration amount.

Note: The limit values vary depending on the decoration process (overglaze color, underglaze color) and the type of food in contact. *

5、 Glass knife, fork, spoon

Execution standard: GB 4806.5-2016 "National Food Safety Standard - Glass Products"

1. Sensory indicators.

2. Physical and chemical indicators:

Migration of heavy metals (lead, cadmium).

6、 Process for Handling Test Reports

1. Fill out the application form: Determine the material and purpose of the product (contact with food types such as acidic, oily, and water-based).

2. Sample delivery:

Stainless steel/plastic: typically requires 3-5 independent products.

If it is a multi-color product, different colors may need to be sampled separately.

3. Testing: The laboratory conducts the above standard tests based on the material.

4. Report issuance: After passing the test, issue a CMA/CNAS qualification inspection report.

7、 Common review points of e-commerce platform (Taobao/Jingdong/Tiktok)

When listing knives, forks, and spoons on e-commerce platforms, the platform usually requires:

1. The report must be issued by a third-party testing agency with CMA or CNAS qualifications.

The product name, image, and manufacturer name on the report must be consistent with the store's sales information.

If it is children's tableware, in addition to GB4806 testing, sometimes it also needs to comply with GB 4806.2 (nipple standard, if it is silicone material) or relevant child safety standards.

Suggestion: If your product is a stainless steel knife, fork, spoon, directly undergo GB 4806.9 full item testing to meet compliance requirements; If it is plastic/melamine, follow GB 4806.7. If it is a combination material (such as stainless steel head+plastic handle), it is necessary to test both materials separately.
