Guidelines for Handling EU REACH Test Reports for Lubricants
1、 Why do lubricants need to undergo REACH testing
Lubricating oil, as a chemical mixture product, must comply with REACH regulations when sold to the EU market. Lubricating oil is usually composed of base oil and various additives (such as antioxidants, detergents, dispersants, etc.), which may contain substances of high concern (SVHC) or restricted substances under REACH regulations.
The main tested substances include:
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs)
Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, etc.)
Phthalate plasticizers
Nonylphenol (NP)/Octylphenol (OP)
2、 Scope of application
|Lubricant type | Example
|Automotive lubricating oil | Engine oil, gear oil, transmission oil, brake oil
|Industrial lubricating oil | Hydraulic oil, guide rail oil, compressor oil, turbine oil
|Lubricating grease | Bearing grease, gear grease, high-temperature grease
|Metalworking fluid | cutting fluid, stamping oil, quenching fluid
3、 Handling process
1. Project confirmation
Confirm product formula and usage
Determine target market and testing standards
2. Data preparation
Product Ingredient Information Sheet (SDS Safety Data Sheet)
CAS numbers of each substance in the formula
Product samples (usually 500ml or more)
3. Inspection and testing
Laboratory conducts chemical analysis on samples
Determination of SVHC and other restricted substance content
4. Report issuance
Prepare test reports that comply with EU requirements
Provide both Chinese and English versions (available upon request)
4、 Processing cycle and cost
|Project | Reference Scope
|Test cycle | 5-7 working days|
|Testing fee | Depending on the complexity of the formula, usually 1000-3000 yuan
The cost difference mainly depends on the quantity of additives, whether they contain restricted substances, and whether full component analysis is required.
5、 Precautions
Confirming the formula in advance: Providing accurate ingredient information can accelerate the testing process and avoid retesting due to formula changes
Pay attention to the update of SVHC list: The SVHC list of REACH regulation is continuously updated, and it is recommended to regularly review product compliance
Supply chain transmission: Test reports should be fully transmitted to downstream importers or customers
Keep original records: Keep test reports, invoices, contracts, and other materials for at least 5 years
