Organic Solvents EU REACH Chemical Test Report

Organic solvents are one of the key chemical categories controlled under the REACH regulation. Exporting to the EU market typically requires a chemical test report that complies with REACH requirements.

I. Why Organic Solvents Require REACH Testing

Organic solvents (such as alcohols, ketones, esters, hydrocarbons, etc.) are widely used in industries such as paints, coatings, inks, adhesives, and cleaning agents. Due to their volatility, toxicity, and environmental hazards, the EU implements strict chemical substance regulations for organic solvents. Organic solvents exported to the EU must pass REACH testing to ensure they do not contain substances of very high concern (SVHCs) or restricted substances; otherwise, they may face the risk of customs detention, product recall, or even penalties.

II. Main Test Items

| Test Category | Specific Content

| SVHC Screening | Detects whether the product contains substances of very high concern as published by the EU (such as phthalates, flame retardants, etc.)

| Restricted Substances Detection | Detects the content of restricted organic solvents such as toluene, xylene, and benzene according to REACH Annex XVII

| Physicochemical Properties | Determination of parameters such as flash point, boiling point, density, vapor pressure, and solubility

| Toxicological Assessment | Health hazard assessment including acute toxicity, skin irritation, eye irritation, and mutagenicity

| Environmental Hazard Testing | Ecological safety assessment including biodegradability, aquatic toxicity, and soil adsorption coefficient

III. Common Organic Solvent Types Required for Testing

Alcohols: Methanol, Ethanol, Isopropanol, Ethylene Glycol

Ketones: Acetone, Butanone (MEK), Cyclohexanone

Esters: Ethyl Acetate, Butyl Acetate

Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Benzene, Toluene, Xylene

Halogenated Hydrocarbons: Dichloromethane, Trichloroethylene

Others: Dimethylformamide (DMF), Tetrahydrofuran (THF)

IV. Testing Procedure

1. Client Submission: Provide solvent composition formulation, Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and information on the export destination country.

2. Project Assessment: The testing agency identifies the substances to be tested and their limit requirements based on the formulation.

3. Sample Testing: Laboratory testing is conducted according to EU standard methods.

4. Report Preparation: A REACH test report in both Chinese and English is issued, including test data, conclusions, and recommendations.

5. Audit and Delivery: A formal report will be issued after technical audit, typically within 5-7 business days.

V. Precautions

Different organic solvents for different applications may be subject to different regulatory requirements; confirmation must be made based on the specific application scenario.

Some organic solvents are REACH registered substances; formal registration is required for annual imports exceeding 1 ton.

It is recommended to choose a third-party testing organization with CNAS/CMA accreditation and familiarity with EU regulations.

The report is generally valid for 3 years, but retesting is required if regulations are updated or the product formulation changes.
