According to China's mandatory standard GB4806 (Safety of Food Contact Materials), stainless steel faucets (such as faucets), as products that come into direct contact with drinking water, must undergo testing and certification in accordance with GB4806.9-2016 (Food Contact Metal Materials and Articles). The following are the specific procedures and requirements.
I. Core Testing Requirements
1. Applicable Standards
- Main Standard: GB4806.9-2016 (Metal Materials and Articles)
- Supplementary Standard: GB4806.1-2016 (General Safety Requirements)
- Key Test Items: Heavy metal migration (lead, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, etc.), sensory indicators (odor, color), and potassium permanganate consumption.
2. Sample Requirements
- Quantity: At least 3-5 complete samples (including internal metal parts in contact with water).
- Condition: Consistent with mass-produced finished products, without special treatment (such as coating with polish).
3. Material Restrictions
- Stainless steel grades (such as 304 and 316) do not affect certification, but must meet migration limits:
- Lead (Pb) ≤ 0.01 mg/L, Cadmium (Cd) ≤ 0.005 mg/L, Nickel (Ni) ≤ 0.1 mg/L.
II. Testing Process and Steps
Phase 1: Preliminary Preparation
1. Selecting a Testing Agency
- Select a laboratory with dual certification from the China Metrology Accreditation Service (CMA) and China National Accreditation Service (CNAS).
2. Submitting Application Materials
- Business license, product technical drawings, and material composition specifications
- Complete the Testing Application Form, sign the contract, and pay the fee.
Phase 2: Laboratory Testing Items
The following tests are conducted in accordance with GB4806.9-2016:
1. Heavy Metal Migration Test
- Simulated acidic/neutral solution immersion (4% acetic acid or water) to test the amount of lead, cadmium, arsenic, etc. dissolved.
2. Sensory Index Testing
- The soaking liquid must be free of odor, turbidity, or loose foreign matter.
3. Potassium Permanganate Consumption
- Organic Small Molecules Migration Test (Limit ≤ 10 mg/kg).
4. Other Items (if applicable)
- Coating Safety (If the faucet has a coating, compliance with GB4806.10 must be met).
Phase 3: Report Review and Certification
1. Report Generation: The laboratory will issue a detailed report containing the test data, methods, and conclusions.
2. Certificate Issuance: Upon successful review, a GB4806.9 Certificate of Compliance will be issued. This certificate is valid for an unlimited period, but any material changes require retesting.
III. Time and Cost Reference
- Turnaround: Normally 5 working days (expedited processing can be reduced to 3 days).
Fees:
Basic heavy metal migration testing: 300-500 RMB per test
Full-scale testing (including sensory evaluation and migration analysis): 800-1200 RMB per sample
(Fees vary depending on material complexity and the number of test items).
