Detailed Procedure for Obtaining an EU RoHS Test Report for Wired Earphones

Wired earphones fall under the scope of the EU RoHS 2.0 directive (2011/65/EU + 2015/863/EU), which regulates 10 specific substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and four phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP). Testing is conducted in accordance with the IEC 62321 series of standards.

I. Initial Documentation Review and Application

1. Complete the test application form, including details such as product model, brand, applicant information, destination country, required language for the report, and whether a CNAS accreditation mark is needed.

2. Provide supporting documentation: a Bill of Materials (BOM) listing the materials of all components; photographs of the product’s exterior and internal components (disassembled); and material descriptions, categorized by type (e.g., plastics, metals, cables, circuit boards, etc.).

3. Define the testing strategy: Determine whether to test individual homogeneous materials (by disassembling the entire unit) or to group key materials for testing. Please note that an RoHS report is valid only for the specific samples submitted for testing.

II. Sample Submission Requirements

For wired earphones, complete finished products must be submitted—typically 1 to 2 full units. Upon receipt, the laboratory will disassemble the product into individual homogeneous units. Common units for analysis include: plastic earphone housings, TPE/PVC cables, PCBs, solder joints, speaker magnets and brackets, silicone ear tips, metal contact springs, cable jackets, and terminal platings.

Different homogeneous materials are sampled and tested separately, while identical materials from the same production batch may be combined for testing.

III. Laboratory Testing Phase

Once samples are received, registered, and photographed, they undergo pre-treatment followed by instrumental analysis. At DTi (Dezewei), the standard turnaround time is 5 to 7 business days, calculated from the moment all samples and documentation have been received and the testing strategy has been confirmed. If the sample consists of complex materials, contains a large number of components to be tested, or requires retesting, the turnaround time will be extended accordingly.

IV. Report Review, Certification, and Follow-up

1. Once testing is complete, an engineer will review the raw data and verify the results against the applicable limits.

2. If the sample passes, a RoHS test report bearing the CNAS accreditation mark will be issued (Dezewei Testing’s CNAS registration number: L8083). The report will include sample details, regulated substances, test methods, limits, and the final pass/fail determination.

3. If the sample fails, the non-compliant data will be provided. The client may choose to replace the materials or implement corrective actions before resubmitting samples for retesting; additional fees will apply for any retesting.

4. Upon receiving the RoHS report, the company may draft its own Declaration of Conformity (DoC). As a self-declaration document, the DoC is used in conjunction with the RoHS report for purposes such as EU customs clearance, audits by cross-border e-commerce platforms (e.g., Amazon), and inspections by local market regulatory authorities.

V. Important Notes

1. The RoHS test report applies only to the specific model and materials of the submitted sample. If there are any subsequent changes to the product materials, suppliers, or material formulations, the product must be retested.

2. For wired headphones exported to the EU, RoHS is only one of the regulatory requirements under the CE marking framework. Compliance with the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive and the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) must also be assessed. Depending on the product, other regulations such as REACH or the POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) Regulation may also apply. Full CE compliance requires testing and technical documentation in accordance with all relevant directives.

3. Companies must retain the test report and the product’s technical documentation, as EU regulatory authorities may request these records at any time.
