GB4806 is China's national food safety standard system for food contact materials and articles, specifically designed to regulate the safety of various materials, containers, and tools that come into contact with food, ensuring consumer health.
I. Applicable Core Standards
Food storage bags must comply with China's GB4806 series of national food safety standards. The core standard is GB4806.7-2023, "National Food Safety Standard for Plastic Materials and Articles for Food Contact," which officially came into effect on September 6, 2024. This standard replaces the original GB4806.6-2016 and GB4806.7-2016. It must also comply with GB4806.1-2016 General Safety Requirements and GB9685-2016 "Standard for the Use of Additives in Food Contact Materials and Articles."
II. Key Testing Items for Food Contact Materials Reports
1. Sensory and Physical Performance Testing
Appearance: The surface must be smooth and free of wrinkles, bubbles, perforations, and other defects. Sealing must be tight, and the color uniform.
Odor: No off-odors or unpleasant smells to avoid affecting food quality.
Physical Properties: High-temperature resistance, flexibility, mechanical strength, etc., ensuring stable performance during use.
2. Key Physicochemical Safety Testing
Total Migration: Water (simulating water-based foods), 4% acetic acid (simulating acidic foods), 65% ethanol (simulating alcoholic foods), and n-hexane (simulating oily foods) are used as simulants. The total amount of migrated substances is tested under specified temperature and humidity conditions. This is a comprehensive safety indicator.
Heavy Metal Migration: The migration amounts of heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and chromium (Cr) are tested. Each heavy metal has strict limits to prevent accumulation in the human body and damage to organs.
Evaporation Residue: This measures the content of non-volatile substances in the four simulated solutions mentioned above. Exceeding the limit may indicate the presence of unpolymerized monomers or additive impurities.
Potassium Permanganate Consumption: This measures the release of oxidizable organic matter. Exceeding the limit reflects problems with material purity or the production process.
Specific Migrating Substances: This detects the migration of specific substances such as vinyl chloride monomer and plasticizers. GB4806.7-2023 adds a limit of 0.01 mg/kg for the total migration of aromatic primary amines and lowers the migration limit for bisphenol A (BPA) to 0.05 mg/kg, prohibiting its use in infant products.
3. Microbiological Testing
The total bacterial count must meet hygiene standards. Pathogenic bacteria such as coliforms, Salmonella, Shigella, and Staphylococcus aureus must not be detected.
4. Labeling Testing
Production license number and mark, product material, manufacturer information, production date, applicable standard (e.g., GB4806.7-2023), and usage precautions must be labeled. III. Report Processing
1. Institutional Requirements: Reports must be issued by a third-party testing institution with CNAS and CMA accreditations, such as Dezewei Testing (CNAS registration number: L8083).
2. Processing Procedure:
Confirm testing items, fees, and timeframe;
Fill out the testing application form;
Send samples (quantity determined by the institution);
Laboratory testing;
Draft report confirmation;
Issuance of the final report.
3. Timeframe and Fees: The standard timeframe is 5-7 days after receiving the samples, expedited is 2-3 days (50% expedited fee applies); fees vary depending on the number of testing items—more items and shorter timeframes result in higher costs.
IV. Purchase and Usage Recommendations
Prioritize PE (polyethylene) food storage bags, as they offer high safety and are suitable for refrigeration and room temperature storage; use PVC bags with caution, avoiding contact with high temperatures and oily foods to prevent plasticizer migration.
Do not put food storage bags containing hot foods into the microwave oven. Qualified PE food storage bags are only suitable for use in room temperature, refrigerated, and frozen environments.
