EU ROHS Test Guide for Hair Dryer

Hair dryers need to do EU RoHS testing. This is because RoHS compliance is mandatory, especially for electronic and electrical equipment sold to the European market, including hair dryers.

1. Understand the RoHS Directive

The RoHS Directive is a mandatory standard established by EU legislation to restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment to protect human health and the environment. These harmful substances include lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).

2. Determine the testing items

The EU RoHS testing project for hair dryers mainly includes the following aspects:

1. Lead (Pb) content detection: The RoHS directive stipulates that the lead content cannot exceed 0.1%. The circuit boards, solder joints and other parts of the hair dryer may contain lead and require strict testing.

2. Mercury (Hg) content detection: Mercury is extremely harmful to the environment and human health. The RoHS directive stipulates that its content cannot exceed 0.1%. Switches, sensors and other components in hair dryers need to be tested for mercury content.

3. Cadmium (Cd) content detection: Cadmium is a highly toxic substance, and the RoHS directive limits its content to no more than 0.01%. Batteries, circuit boards and plastic parts in hair dryers may contain cadmium and must be tested.

4. Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) content detection: Hexavalent chromium is a strong carcinogen, and the RoHS directive requires that its content cannot exceed 0.1%. The metal parts in the hair dryer may use rust inhibitors or electroplating layers containing hexavalent chromium, and these parts need to be tested.

5. Polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) content detection: These two substances are commonly used flame retardants in electronic equipment. The RoHS directive limits their content to no more than 0.1%. Plastic parts and cords in hair dryers need to be tested.

3. Prepare testing materials

1. Test samples: Provide 2-3 hair dryer samples to ensure that the samples are representative.

2. Technical information:

Circuit schematic diagram: Provide the circuit schematic diagram of the hair dryer so that the testing agency can understand the circuit structure of the product and the parts that may contain harmful substances.

Product manual or user manual: Provide the product manual or user manual of the hair dryer so that the testing agency can understand the usage and precautions of the product.

Parts list (BOM list): Lists all parts and supplier information in the hair dryer so that testing agencies can trace the source of hazardous substances.

PCB diagram (front and back): Provide front and back photos of the hair dryer PCB diagram so that the testing agency can understand the layout of the PCB and the parts that may contain harmful substances.


4. Select a testing agency

Enterprises need to choose a third-party testing agency with RoHS certification qualifications. These institutions should be accredited by the EU and have the ability and experience to conduct RoHS testing.

5. Fill out and submit the application form

Fill out the RoHS test application form, provide detailed product information, including product model, specifications, materials used and production processes, etc., and submit samples and technical information to the testing agency.

6. Conduct sample testing

The testing agency will conduct detailed hazardous substance testing on the samples to ensure that the test results are within the limits specified by the RoHS directive.

7. Issuance of test report

If the hair dryer passes all tests, the testing agency will issue a RoHS compliance test report. The report contains detailed test results and conclusions, proving that the product complies with the requirements of the RoHS directive.
