1. Restricted substances
The RoHS directive limits the content of the following six hazardous substances:

3. Cadmium (Cd): The content is limited to no more than 0.01% (by weight).

6. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE): The content is limited to no more than 0.1% (by weight).
2. Test method
RoHS testing usually uses the following methods to determine the content of the above six hazardous substances in products:
X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF): This is a commonly used non-destructive analysis method that can quickly detect the elemental content in a sample.
Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF): This is also a commonly used X-ray fluorescence spectrometry analysis method with higher sensitivity and accuracy.
3. Compliance Verification
Manufacturer or importer: Products are required to undergo RoHS testing to prove compliance with the requirements of the RoHS Directive.
Test report: must be issued by an accredited third-party laboratory and must be stamped with the EU accreditation mark.
4. Exemptions
It is worth noting that the EU RoHS Directive also contains some exemptions that allow the use of certain restricted substances under specific conditions. However, these exemptions are often subject to strict limitations and are subject to change as the Directive is updated. For example, on May 21, 2024, the European Commission issued Directive (EU) 2024/1416, which updated Article 39(a) of Appendix III of the RoHS Directive, involving the downgrade of cadmium-based semiconductor nanocrystals in display lighting equipment. Cadmium selenide for quantum dots (cadmium for display area <0.2μg/mm²), and a new Article 39(b) exemption has been added.
