What are the EU RoHS testing requirements and testing items for electric vehicle

Date:2024-09-23 11:28:47 Classification :【question】 Visits:
When electric vehicles undergo RoHS testing in the EU, the restrictions on hazardous substances that need attention are mainly based on the RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU), which restricts the use of specific hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment. For electric vehicles, RoHS testing usually includes the following items:

1. Lead (Pb): not to exceed 0.1% (1000 ppm).

2. Mercury (Hg): not to exceed 0.1% (1000 ppm).

3. Cadmium (Cd): Not to exceed 0.01% (100 ppm).

4. Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+): shall not exceed 0.1% (1000 ppm).

5. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs): shall not exceed 0.1% (1000 ppm).

6. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): shall not exceed 0.1% (1000 ppm).

In addition, starting from July 22, 2019, the RoHS Directive also restricts the use of four phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP). These substances are commonly used as plasticizers and are therefore used in electric vehicles. May be detected in certain plastic parts.

RoHS testing requirements and testing items for electric vehicles may change as regulations are updated, so before testing, it is recommended to consult a professional testing agency to obtain the latest testing requirements and standards. Electric vehicles also need to comply with other relevant safety and performance standards in the EU market, such as EN 15194:2017, which is a safety standard for electric bicycles and covers mechanical safety, battery and charger safety requirements, etc.

For electric vehicle batteries, the EU also has specific regulations and standards, such as the new EU battery regulations, which include requirements for the carbon footprint and recycling content of batteries, as well as battery passport and labeling requirements. These requirements apply to electric vehicle (EV) batteries, light transport batteries and industrial batteries.

When conducting RoHS testing, manufacturers need to ensure that their products comply with all applicable hazardous substance restrictions and may require testing and certification by a third-party testing agency to demonstrate compliance of their products. This usually includes steps such as product design evaluation, material composition analysis, test report generation, and affixing the CE mark to the product.
