Glass packaging US FDA food contact material testing process

Date:2025-01-14 09:48:03 Classification :【question】 Visits:
As a food contact material, glass packaging needs to pass the food contact material test of the US Food and Drug Administration before being sold in the US market. The following is the detailed process of glass packaging US FDA food contact material testing:

1. Understand regulations and standards

First, companies need to understand the FDA's regulations and standards for food contact materials to ensure that the products meet the relevant requirements. These regulations and standards include the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), Food Contact Substances Notifications, etc. Among them, for food contact materials such as glass bottles, the FDA mainly focuses on the safety, durability and compatibility with food.

2. Prepare application materials

Applicants need to provide detailed information on glass bottles, including:

Material information: such as glass type (such as borosilicate glass, soda-lime glass, etc.), whether it contains organic coatings, etc.

Use description: such as holding food, medicine, etc.

Production process: including the production, processing, molding and other process of glass.

In addition, it is necessary to prepare application materials such as product description, ingredient list, test report, etc. to ensure that all information is true and complete.

3. Application and quotation

Fill in the test application form: The applicant needs to fill in the test application form and provide basic information of the product, such as product name, model, specifications, purpose, etc.

Submit test samples: Submit representative samples to the testing agency for sample confirmation.

Draft a quotation contract: The testing agency will draft a quotation contract based on the test application form and samples, and provide a test quotation.

Confirm the quotation and pay the test fee: The applicant needs to confirm the quotation and pay the test fee.

4. Sample testing

The testing agency will test the samples, and the test items include but are not limited to:

Composition analysis: Test whether the material contains toxic and harmful substances, such as heavy metals, harmful additives, etc.

Migration test: Evaluate the content of chemicals that may be released into food during contact with food.

Extract test: Determine the chemicals that may dissolve into food when the material comes into contact with food.

Heavy metal test: Test the content of heavy metals in the material, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.

Thermal stability test: Evaluate the performance and stability of the material under high temperature conditions.

These tests are designed to verify that glass packaging does not release harmful substances into food under normal use conditions, thereby ensuring the safety and hygiene of food.

V. Notification of results and proof of compliance

Test report: After the test is completed, the testing agency will evaluate the safety of food contact materials based on the results of migration tests and chemical analysis, and issue a test report. The test report should include sample information, test conditions, migration data, chemical analysis results, and safety assessment.

Notification of results: FDA or the testing agency will notify the applicant of the test results.

Proof of compliance: If the glass packaging passes all necessary tests, the applicant will receive a certificate of conformity or compliance certificate that complies with FDA testing. This indicates that the product can be sold and used in the US market.
