Chemical safety requirements for toys in the international ISO8124 standard

Date:2024-08-07 10:56:25 Classification :【question】 Visits:
ISO 8124 is a toy safety standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It includes multiple parts, each of which targets different safety requirements. The following are the main contents of ISO 8124 standard testing:

1. Mechanical and physical performance safety standards (ISO 8124-1): This part of the standard specifies the structural characteristics of toys, including sharpness, size, shape, clearance, etc., as well as special performance requirements for specific toy categories, such as the kinetic energy of projectiles. Restraint and ride-on toy stability. It applies to all toys designed or intended for children under 14 years of age and specifies specific requirements and test methods for toys for children of different ages.

2. Flammability (ISO 8124-2): This section details the types of flammable materials that are prohibited in toys, as well as the flame retardant requirements and test methods for specific toys when exposed to fire sources.

3. Migration of specific elements (ISO 8124-3): This part mainly controls the content of heavy metals in contact materials in toy products, including limit requirements for elements such as antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium. It stipulates test scope, test methods and material definitions, and made some non-technical adjustments in the 2010 update, such as changes to test reagents and an update to the maximum respirable amount of antimony.

The chemical safety requirements for toys in the ISO 8124 standard are mainly concentrated in the third part, namely ISO 8124-3, which stipulates the heavy metal content limits for contact materials in toy products.

The following are specific limit requirements:

Antimony (Sb): no more than 130 ppm

Arsenic (As): no more than 25 ppm

Barium (Ba): no more than 1000 ppm

Cadmium (Cd): no more than 75 ppm

Chromium (Cr): no more than 60 ppm

Lead (Pb): no more than 90 ppm

Mercury (Hg): no more than 60 ppm

Selenium (Se): no more than 500 ppm

These limits are required to prevent certain materials in toys from causing chemical harm to children. In addition, the ISO 8124 standard is still under development and is expected to add requirements for the total concentration of specific elements in toy materials and the determination of phthalate plasticizers in plastic materials.
