Do puzzle toys need to undergo American ASTM F963 testing?

Date:2024-08-27 17:03:42 Classification :【question】 Visits:
When jigsaw puzzles are sold in the United States, they usually need to undergo American ASTM F963 testing. This is because ASTM F963 is an American toy testing standard developed by the National Bureau of Standards of the U.S. Department of Commerce, which mainly focuses on the safety of children's toys. This standard puts forward detailed requirements for the mechanical and physical properties, chemical properties, labels and instructions of children's toys to ensure that the toys will not cause harm to children during use.

Specifically, the ASTM F963 testing of puzzle toys may involve the following aspects of testing:

1. Physical and mechanical performance testing: including impact test, drop test, tensile test for component removal, pressure test, deflection test, etc., to evaluate the structural stability and use safety of the toy. These tests are designed to ensure that the toys will not cause harm to children due to structural problems under normal use and foreseeable abuse.

2. Combustion performance test: Conduct a horizontal combustion test on the toy. It is required that the self-burning speed along the main axis of the toy after it catches fire is lower than a certain standard (such as 2.5mm/s) to ensure that the toy will not cause serious fire hazards during use. .

3. Chemical performance test: It mainly tests the harmful substances that may exist in toys, such as the migration amount and total lead content of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, etc.). These tests are designed to ensure that the levels of harmful substances in toys do not exceed safe limits and therefore do not pose a risk to children's health.

In addition, the ASTM F963 standard may also impose requirements on labels and instructions for toys to ensure that consumers can use toys correctly and understand the safety warning information of toys.

It should be noted that the ASTM F963 standard is a continuously updated standard, and its latest version is ASTM F963-23, which will become a mandatory toy safety standard from April 20, 2024. Therefore, when preparing to sell puzzle toys to the US market, it is recommended to pay close attention to the latest developments in the ASTM F963 standard and ensure that the product meets the requirements of the latest version.

In order to pass the ASTM F963 test and obtain the corresponding certification certificate (such as CPC certificate), puzzle toy manufacturers or suppliers need to choose an institution with certification qualifications for testing and certification. Before applying for testing and certification, manufacturers or suppliers need to prepare sufficient information, including product instructions, test reports, etc., and submit applications in accordance with the requirements of the certification body. After passing the test and certification, the manufacturer or supplier will obtain a certification certificate and test report. These documents will prove that its product meets the requirements of the ASTM F963 standard and can be sold in the U.S. market.
