1. Standard background and purpose

The GB4806.12-2022 standard was issued by the National Health Commission of China (NHC) and will be officially implemented on December 30, 2022. The release of this standard aims to fill the gap in food safety standards for bamboo and wood materials and products used in food contact in my country, provide clear guidance and specifications for such materials, and ensure that they will not cause harm to human health during use.

2. Scope of application

The GB4806.12-2022 standard applies to various food contact materials and products made of bamboo, wood or cork, including but not limited to chopsticks, bowls, plates, shovels, spoons and other tableware, as well as cork, plant fiber board products and other bamboo and wood materials and products used in food contact.

3. Main technical requirements

Raw material requirements:

The raw materials of bamboo and wood materials and products used for food contact should be non-toxic and harmless, and substances harmful to human health must not be used.

The use of inks, waxes and other additives should comply with the regulations of GB 9685 and relevant announcements of the National Health Commission.

Sensory requirements:

Bamboo and wood materials and products should be of normal color and free of burrs, insects, odors, mildew spots or other dirt.

The soaking liquid obtained from the migration test should not have any deterioration in sensory properties such as sedimentation, odor, and abnormal coloring.

Physical and chemical indicators:

The total migration amount, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide, pentachlorophenol and its salts and other migratory substance indicators should comply with the standards.

Residue indicators, such as thiabendazole, o-phenylphenol, imazapril, biphenyl, etc., should also comply with the standards.

For food-contact bamboo and wood materials and products that use coatings, inks, and/or adhesives, etc., they should also comply with the provisions of the corresponding national food safety standards for coatings, inks, and/or adhesives.

Microbiological limits:

The microorganisms of bamboo and wood materials and products that are expected to be in direct contact with food and used directly without disinfection or cleaning should comply with the regulations of GB 14934.

Bamboo materials and products that come into contact with food that need to be peeled, shelled or washed before eating, cooking or processing are excluded.

4. Testing and Certification

Testing agency:

Manufacturers or importers should entrust a testing agency with corresponding qualifications to conduct testing to the GB4806.12-2022 standard.

The testing agency should have advanced testing equipment and professional testing personnel, and be able to conduct various testing items accurately and reliably.

Test report:

The testing agency should issue a testing report that meets the standard requirements. The report should include information such as testing items, testing methods, testing results and conclusions.

The test report should be true, accurate and reliable, and should be stamped with the official seal of the testing agency or a special seal for testing.

Certification process:

After obtaining the test report, the manufacturer or importer can apply for certification to the GB4806.12-2022 standard from the relevant certification agency.

The certification body will review the test report and may conduct on-site inspection or sampling re-inspection.

If it meets the standard requirements, the certification agency will issue the corresponding certification certificate or logo to prove that the product has passed the testing and certification of the GB4806.12-2022 standard.
