Glass China GB4806 Food Contact Materials Testing Guide

Date:2025-03-07 09:46:31 Classification :【question】 Visits:
The following is a detailed guide to China's GB4806 food contact material testing (for glass), based on the latest standards and industry practices:

I. Scope of application of the standard

The GB 4806 series of standards are China's mandatory safety specifications for food contact materials, including:

- Core requirements: Ensure that the glass material will not release harmful substances and migrate into food under normal use conditions.

II. Core items for glass testing

1. Sensory requirements

- Appearance inspection: No cracks, sharp edges, obvious bubbles or impurities.

- Soaking liquid test: Use 4% acetic acid or distilled water to simulate the food contact environment and observe whether the soaking liquid is turbid or has an odor.

2. Physical and chemical indicators

- Thermal shock resistance (thermal stability): Drop the glass from high temperature (such as 100℃) to low temperature (such as 0℃) to test whether it breaks.

- Internal stress (polarized light detection): Ensure that the internal stress of the glass meets the standard (≤40 nm/cm) to prevent self-explosion due to uneven stress.

3. Migration test

- Simulation conditions: According to the actual use temperature and time, select the following test conditions:

- Normal temperature migration (20℃, 24 hours): Applicable to cold water cups.

- High temperature migration (70℃, 2 hours): Applicable to hot drink cups.

- Test substances: The migration of heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), antimony (Sb) must be lower than the limit value (such as lead ≤0.8 mg/dm²).

4. Other special tests

- Water resistance test (GB 6582): Evaluate the chemical stability of glass materials to water.

- Acid and alkali resistance: For glass cups that may come into contact with acidic or alkaline foods (such as lemon juice, carbonated drinks).

III. Test process

1. Sample preparation: Select glass cups from the same batch, wash and dry naturally.

2. Pretreatment: Wash or sterilize according to the standard (such as high temperature baking).

3. Laboratory testing: Sensory, migration tests, and physical and chemical performance tests are carried out in batches.

4. Result determination: All items must comply with the limits of GB 4806.5-2016 and GB 4806.1 (general safety requirements).

5. Report issuance: CNAS/CMA accredited laboratories provide test reports, which are usually valid for 1-2 years.

IV. Notes

1. Certification selection:

- Laboratories with CMA (China Metrology Certification) or CNAS (China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment) qualifications are preferred.

2. Special process treatment:

- If the glass contains printed patterns or coatings, additional testing of the migration safety of the ink or coating is required (refer to GB 4806.10).

3. Label compliance:

- The product must be labeled with the words "food contact", material type, operating temperature range and manufacturer information.
