UL 4200A is a voluntary standard for the safety of button batteries in household products, developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to reduce the risk of children swallowing button batteries.
I. Reporting Scope Requirements
1. Applicable Products: Household consumer products using button lithium batteries with a diameter ≤32mm and a diameter greater than their height; excluding products using non-button lithium batteries, and professional/commercial products explicitly placed out of children's reach for specific purposes.
2. Standard Version: UL 4200A:2023 (corresponding to US 16 CFR Part 1263, mandatory from March 19, 2024) must be adopted. This version expands coverage from lithium batteries to all button battery types except zinc-air batteries.
II. Core Report Content Requirements
The report must fully cover all assessment dimensions of the UL4200A standard, clearly specifying the product's compliance details:
1. Structural Compliance Assessment
Replaceable Battery Products: Verify that the battery cannot be accessed by the IEC61032 probe 11; the battery compartment must be opened with a tool (screwdriver/coin), or at least through two independent, consecutive actions; screws or similar fasteners must be secured to the compartment cover/door to prevent them from falling off.
Non-Replaceable Battery Products: Verify that the battery is completely isolated by the casing, secured by welding/riveting, etc., making it inaccessible and unremovable by users or children.
2. Abuse Test Results
Drop Test: Portable products must be dropped 3 times, and handheld products 10 times (each drop from a height of 1 meter onto a horizontal hard surface);
Impact Test: The battery compartment cover/door must withstand 3 impact tests at 2J each;
Force Test: After the above tests, a force of 45N is applied for 10 seconds using an IEC61032 probe 11. The battery must remain inaccessible, and the compartment cover must maintain normal function. Some products require an additional 330N crush test for 10 seconds.
3. Installation Secureness Test Results
Non-replaceable batteries must withstand a 20N outward pulling force test for 10 seconds. The battery must not separate or become loose.
4. Labeling and Packaging Compliance
The product itself and its packaging must have English warning labels clearly indicating the fatal risk of accidental ingestion of button batteries, the need to keep out of reach of children, and the requirement to seek immediate medical attention after ingestion. The label color must contrast sharply with the background;
For products manufactured/imported after February 12, 2023, the packaging must comply with the child protection requirements of the US Poison Packaging Standard. 5. Conclusions and Recommendations
Clearly indicate whether the product complies with UL4200A:2023 standards. If any non-compliance exists, provide targeted rectification suggestions such as structural adjustments and process optimizations.
III. Application Process and Qualification Requirements
1. Institution Selection: A third-party laboratory accredited by the US CPSC and possessing ISO17025 certification (e.g., Dezewei Testing CNAS registration number: L8083) must be selected. Reports issued by unqualified institutions will not be recognized by the platform and regulatory authorities.
2. Document and Sample Preparation
Documents: Product technical specifications, battery compartment design drawings, instruction manual, battery model information, warning label design draft; for non-replaceable batteries, proof of welding/riveting fixation is required.
Samples: Provide a complete finished product sample. If the product has battery compartment components of different materials/colors, corresponding samples must be provided separately.
3. Processing Time and Costs: The standard testing cycle is approximately 5-7 business days, which may be longer for complex products; the processing fee is 1000-3000 RMB, varying depending on the product type and the number of testing items.
IV. Additional Requirements for E-commerce Platform Access
When selling on US sites such as Amazon and Temu, the UL4200A report must be submitted together with the GCC (General Compliance Certification). The report must fully indicate the laboratory's qualifications, the testing standard version, and the results of all test items, ensuring no omissions; otherwise, the product may face the risk of being removed from the platform.
