Glass is an amorphous inorganic non-metallic material, which is generally made of a variety of inorganic minerals (such as quartz sand, borax, boric acid, Baryte, Barium carbonate, limestone, feldspar, soda ash, etc.) as the main raw materials, and a small amount of auxiliary raw materials are added. As a widely used material in the fields of architecture, home furnishings, and industry, glass has also been influenced by REACH regulations. So, according to REACH regulations, how many items do glass REACH reports need to be tested?
1、 What is REACH?
REACH is the abbreviation for the European Union regulation "REGULATION considering the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals". It is a chemical regulatory system established by the European Union and implemented on June 1, 2007.
On December 18, 2006, the European Parliament and Council officially passed the REACH regulation on the registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemicals, which provides preventive management for all chemicals entering the markets of the 28 member states of the European Union. This regulation officially came into effect on June 1, 2007 and began to be implemented on June 1 of the following year. The competent authority is the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
This is a regulatory proposal related to the production, trade, and use safety of chemicals. The regulations aim to protect human health and environmental safety, maintain and enhance the competitiveness of the EU chemical industry, and develop innovative capabilities for non-toxic and harmless compounds, prevent market fragmentation, increase transparency in the use of chemicals, promote non animal experiments, and pursue sustainable social development.
2、 What is SVHC?
SVHC "distance of very high concern".
According to REACH regulations, one of the following substances can be considered as very high concern substances (SVHC):
Carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic (CMR) reproduction; Persistent, Bioaccumulation and toxic; Very persistent and Bioaccumulation (vPvBs); Substances that cause irreversible damage to the environment or human health and disrupt the hormone system;
3、 How many items need to be tested in the glass REACH report?
The glass products that often make REACH reports include: glass cups, glass bowls, glass plates, and glass handicrafts
So far, there are a total of 173 substances on the SVHC High Concern Material List. This includes 55 inorganic substances.
Glass products require testing a complete set of 173 substances.
