Plastic rubber is an indispensable material in our daily lives, but it also poses environmental and health risks. In order to protect the public interest, exporting plastic rubber to the European Union requires conducting POPS regulatory testing. This test aims to evaluate whether the harmful substances in these materials exceed safety standards and propose corresponding solutions.

1、 What is the EU POPS regulation?

EU POPs regulations: namely, Persistent organic pollutant refer to natural or synthetic organic pollutants that can migrate for a long distance and exist in the environment through various environmental media (air, water, organisms, etc.), have long-term residual, bioaccumulative, semi volatile and high quality, and pose a serious threat to human health and the environment. According to the purpose of the test sample, select the test items and require that each test sample be no less than 10g. Only non-metallic materials are tested.

2、 Common test substances for POPs regulations:

Short chain Chlorinated paraffins: SCCP, limit requirements: substances or configurations<10000 ppm, articles<1500 ppm, main application: it is widely used in cables, and can also be used to make water pipes, floors, films, Artificial leather, plastic products and daily necessities. Mainly used as a flame retardant.

PFOS, limit requirement: substance or configuration ≤ 10 ppm, item, semi-finished product or component<1000 ppm, for textile materials, the coating material content must be<1ug/m2. Main application: widely used in the production of surface anti fouling agents such as textiles, leather products, furniture, and carpets.

Hexabromo Cyclododecane: HBCDD, limit requirement: 100 ppm, mainly used for polypropylene plastics and fibers, flame retardancy of polystyrene foam, and also for polyester fabrics.

3、 EU POPs Restricted Substance Requirements

Requirements for tetrabromo Diphenyl ether, Pentabromodiphenyl ether, hexabromo Diphenyl ether, heptabromo Diphenyl ether, decabromodiphenyl: single item of five substances in the substance ≤ 10ppm; The sum of 5 items in the mixture and item ≤ 500ppm; Tetrabromo, pentabromo, hexabromo, heptabromo and Decabromodiphenyl ether in RoHS products are exempt from POPs regulations.

Short chain Chlorinated paraffins (SCCP) requirements: substance/mixture<1%, article<0.15%

Hexabromo Cyclododecane (HBCDD) requirements: substances, mixtures, articles and flame retardant parts of articles ≤ 100mg/kg (0.01% by weight).

Requirements for Pentachlorobenzene, Hexachlorobenzene, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalene (PCNs), hexabromobiphenyl and Hexachlorobutadiene: forbidden.

4、 Recommend testing POPs projects

All types of products sold to the European Union must be tested after being split into homogeneous materials (including accessible and non-contact materials). Materials such as metal, ceramics, glass, etc. in the items do not require testing; If it is non-metallic materials such as plastic, rubber, sponge, textiles, coatings, etc., it is recommended to test for substances in POPs after understanding the purpose of the materials.

1. Recommended items for plastics and rubber: polybrominated diphenyl ether, pentaphenylether, hexaphenylether, heptadiphenylether, SCCP, HBCDD, PCB, PCN.

2. Recommended items for electroplating solutions, electroplating labels, coatings, and printing textile materials: PFOS, PFOA, PCP.

3. Recommended items for gloss and adhesive products: PCB, PCN.

4. Recommended items for electronic components and chip IC: bromodiphenyl ether, pentaphenylether, hexaphenylether, heptadiphenylether, SCCP, HBCDD, PCB, PCN.
