How to apply for California Proposition 65 testing for electrical equipment?

Date:2026-01-22 09:21:52 Classification :【question】 Visits:
The following procedure can be followed to conduct California Proposition 65 testing on electrical equipment, clarifying key information such as relevant test items and required documents:

I. Preliminary Preparation: Clarifying Testing Requirements and Documents

1. Determining Test Items

Common California Proposition 65 tests for electrical equipment include:

Heavy metals: Lead (usually 100 ppm for accessible parts), Cadmium (usually 300 ppm for accessible parts); some special components may also involve mercury and hexavalent chromium;

Phytoxides: DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIDP, DnHP, etc., each not exceeding 1000 ppm;

Others: Depending on the equipment material, tests may be required for formaldehyde, flame retardants, bisphenol A (BPA), etc. (e.g., phthalates and BPA are required for plastic casings and wire sheaths, and flame retardants are required for insulation materials).

Test items can be determined specifically based on the product's material and components (e.g., wires and cables, plastic casings, metal parts).

2. Preparing Application Documents

2-3 complete sets of electrical equipment samples (or samples of key accessible components);

Product instruction manual and Bill of Materials (BOM);

Completed California Proposition 65 certification application form provided by the testing organization.

II. Formal Application Process

1. Selecting a Compliant Testing Organization

Choose a third-party laboratory with California Proposition 65 testing accreditation (e.g., Dezeway Testing CNAS Registration No.: L8083). Confirm that the organization possesses relevant certifications (e.g., CNAS, CMA) and is familiar with California Proposition 65 testing standards for electrical equipment.

2. Submitting the Application and Samples

Submit the completed application form and product information to the organization;

Send samples as required by the organization and pay the testing fees (fees vary depending on equipment complexity and the number of tests; there are no subsequent fees such as factory audits or annual audits).

3. Laboratory Testing

The organization will test the samples according to California Proposition 65 standards. The testing cycle is typically 4-5 business days; some organizations offer expedited services. Testing includes chemical composition screening, content detection, and risk assessment.

4. Obtaining the Test Report

After testing, the organization will issue a draft report for confirmation;

Once confirmed, obtain the official test report in both paper and electronic formats.

5. Compliance Processing and Follow-up Maintenance

If the test is passed: the product can be sold normally in California without additional modifications;

If the test fails: the product's materials/formula must be adjusted to reduce the content of harmful substances, or a clear health warning label must be added to the product as required by regulations;
