The German LFGB test covers all materials, including products manufactured using the latest processes, such as chrome plating on barbecue grills, heat resistance testing of Teflon coatings on cooking pans, and silicone sealing ring testing in kettles. The LFGB certification process for fruit knives is as follows:
1. Initial Consultation and Compliance Assessment
Contact a testing organization accredited by the German Accreditation Council (DAkkS) or an EU Notified Body (NB) number, providing detailed information about the fruit knife, including material (e.g., stainless steel, alloy), manufacturing process, types of food it is expected to come into contact with (e.g., acidic, room temperature foods), and intended use. The organization will determine whether the product falls within the certification scope based on LFGB regulations and match corresponding testing items, such as heavy metal leaching testing for metal materials and sensory evaluation, while providing a preliminary quote and timeline (DEZEW Testing CNAS Registration No.: L8083).
2. Contract Signing and Needs Confirmation
After confirming the testing plan, sign a service contract with the organization, clarifying the rights and obligations of both parties, including details such as testing items, fees, timeline, and report language (English or German required). Fruit knives are classified as metal cutlery. The cost typically depends on the complexity of the material and the testing items, with a processing time generally of 5-7 business days.
3. Sample Preparation and Document Submission
Sample Requirements: Provide a finished fruit knife identical to the final sales version. If there are different colors, batches, or materials, separate samples must be submitted.
Document Submission: Product specifications, material composition description, expected usage conditions (contact temperature, time), etc., ensuring accuracy to match testing conditions.
4. Laboratory Compliance Testing
As a metal food contact product, fruit knives must complete the following core tests according to LFGB standards:
Initial Sample Inspection: Confirm the sample meets testing requirements;
Sensory Evaluation: Assess whether the product will transfer unpleasant tastes or odors to food;
Specific Metal Testing: Metal composition analysis, migration testing of leached heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, etc.), ensuring that heavy metal leaching meets Germany's stringent limits.
5. Report Interpretation and Product Rectification
After testing, the testing institution will issue a detailed test report. If a test item fails to meet the standard (e.g., heavy metal migration exceeds the limit), the report will clearly state the items exceeding the standard and their values. The company needs to adjust the materials or production process accordingly, rectify the issues, and resubmit samples for retesting.
6. Obtaining the Report and Market Access
After all tests are passed, an LFGB test report will be obtained. This report has no fixed validity period and remains valid indefinitely as long as the product materials and processes remain unchanged. Products can be affixed with an LFGB cutlery mark with a height ≥5mm. With the report, products can be sold in the German and European markets, and LFGB certification does not require a factory audit.
