UFI is the abbreviation of "Unique Formula Identifier", which means "unique formula identifier" in Chinese. It is a 16-character code used to identify chemical mixture products sold on the EU market. The purpose of UFI is to quickly and accurately obtain detailed product information, including composition and toxicology data, from a poison center through this identifier in the event of an emergency, such as a poisoning incident, so that appropriate medical treatment can be provided.
The process of generating UFI is as follows:
1. Determine whether your product requires UFI. Under EU regulations, a UFI is required if your product is a mixture and has a physical hazard or health hazard classification.
2. Access ECHA’s UFI generator.
3. If you are a company in the EU, you can use your value-added tax number (VAT) to generate UFI. If you are not a company based in the EU, or do not have a VAT number, you can use an internal formula number to generate a UFI. This number is an arbitrary number between 0 and 268435455.
4. Enter the necessary information into ECHA's online generator, and the system will generate a UFI for your product.
5. After generating the UFI, you need to print or paste this identifier on the product label and submit the relevant product information to the EU Poisons Center.
Please note that generating a UFI and placing it on the product label is not enough, you also need to create a file containing this UFI and submit it to the relevant Appointed body. More information can be found on ECHA's official website.
For non-EU businesses, the way to generate a UFI is to use the internal formula number, which is an arbitrary number between 0 and 268435455. Once the UFI has been generated, a Poison Center Notification (PCN) needs to be completed on ECHA's Unified Submission Portal. Only after the notification is successful can UFI be linked to the product.
The generation and use of UFI is to comply with EU regulatory requirements, ensure that key product information can be quickly obtained in emergencies, and at the same time protect corporate trade secrets.
