Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) refer to chemicals synthesized by humans that can persist in the environment, accumulate through biological food chains (webs), and cause harmful effects on human health.
The EU POPs testing projects for coating products mainly include the following types of substances:
1. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs):
- Tetrabromodiphenyl ether, pentabromodiphenyl ether, hexabromodiphenyl ether, heptabromodiphenyl ether, decabromodiphenyl ether: individual items of the five substances in the substance are ≤10ppm, and the sum of the five items in the mixture and article is ≤500ppm. ; Tetrabromo, pentabromo, hexabromo, heptabromo and decabromodiphenyl ether in RoHS products are exempt from POPs regulations.
2. Perfluorooctane sulfonate and its derivatives (PFOS):
- Substances and mixtures ≤10ppm, articles ≤1000ppm; textiles or coated materials ≤1ug/m2.
3. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and related substances:
- PFOA and its salts present in substances, mixtures or articles ≤ 0.025 mg/kg; PFOA related substances in substances, mixtures or articles ≤ 1 mg/kg.
4. Short chain chlorinated paraffin (SCCP):
- <1% for substances/mixtures and <0.15% for articles.
5. Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD):
- The flame retardant part of substances, mixtures, articles and articles ≤100mg/kg (0.01% by weight).
6. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and hexachlorobutadiene:
- Disabled.
7. Pentachlorobenzene and hexachlorobenzene:
- Pentachlorophenol and its salts and esters in substances, mixtures and articles ≤5mg/kg, others are prohibited.
8. Other POPs substances:
- Including chlordane, endosulfan, hexachlorocyclohexane (including lindane), heptachlor, DDT, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, toxaphene, mirex, chlordecone, pentachlor Phenol and its salts and esters, dicofol, etc., these substances are usually banned.
These test items are environmental requirements that coating products must meet before being sold on the EU market to ensure that the products will not cause harm to the environment and human health.
