The latest version of the European Union Regulation 2023 requires UFI coding for the SDS safety data sheet

1、 What is UFI code? UFI code

The full name of UFI is UNIQUE FORMULA Identifier, which is the unique formula identifier of the mixture. It is a unique alphanumeric code that can clearly associate submitted recipe information with a specific mixture of one or a group of mixtures. UFI encoding UFI CODE identifier.

UFI Code: The unique formula identifier (UFI) is a 16 digit alphanumeric code with a defined format, and the correct format is as follows:

UFI: 3300-D02X-700D-G3ST

1. Start with the abbreviation "UFI:" to help distinguish the code from other identifiers

2. 16 alphanumeric characters, uppercase letters, separated into 4 blocks with hyphens

3. Avoid using ambiguous letters such as "o", "I", "L", "B", and "Z"

SDS (Safety Data Sheet) safety data sheet, also known as safety technical specification. The European and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 11014 uses SDS terminology, while many countries in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Asia use MSDS terminology. The GB/T 16483-2008 "Content and Project Sequence of Chemical Safety Data Sheets" implemented on February 1, 2009 in China also stipulates the "Safety Data Sheet for Chemical Products (SDS)".

Latest EU Regulation 2023 SDS Safety Data Sheet Requirements UFI CODE

On June 25, 2020, the European Commission issued Regulation (EU) 2020/878, amending Annex II of the REACH Regulation. Annex II of the REACH regulation specifies the content and format requirements for EU chemical safety data sheets. The new regulations mean a revision of the SDS for the EU market.

This regulation came into effect on January 1, 2021, and SDSs that do not comply with this regulation have a transitional period, which means that both the regulation and the old regulation (Commission Regulation (EU) 2015 830) can be used before December 30, 2022. Starting from January 1, 2023, the new regulation "COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) 2020 878" must be used. In this article, we will briefly outline the main changes.

General requirements:

1. The language used in the SDS safety data sheet should be simple, clear, and accurate, avoiding the use of professional terminology, acronyms, and abbreviations. Statements such as' potentially hazardous', 'no health effects',' safe under most conditions of use 'or' harmless', or any other statement indicating that the substance or mixture is not hazardous, or any other statement that does not match the classification of the substance or mixture, shall not be used.

2. All pages of the SDS safety data sheet (including any attachments) should be numbered and indicate the length of the safety data sheet (such as "page 1 of 3") or indicate whether to follow the next page (such as "continue on next page" or "end of safety data sheet").

Section 1: Identification of Substances/Mixtures

1. Nanoform substances: If the safety data sheet involves one or more nanomaterials or contains nanomaterials, the term 'nanoform' should be used in the product identifier in Section 1 of the SDS.

2. UFI Code UFI Identifier: If the mixture has a unique formula identifier (UFI) according to Section 5 of Annex 8, Part A of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, and the UFI is indicated in the SDS safety data sheet, then the UFI should be provided in this section (Section 1).

Section 2: Hazard Identification

In the "Section 2.3- Other Hazards" section of Section 2, if the product (single substance) has "endocrine disrupting properties", "PBT and vPvB" class substances, it should be displayed in this section and whether it meets the regulations should be indicated. If it is a mixture, all components with a content greater than 0.1% in the mixture should be provided.
