On April 21, 2023, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) added 1,1,1-trichloroethane and C.I. alkaline green 4 (dark malachite green) to the California 65 Hazardous Substances List due to carcinogenicity. This list requires warning labels to be affixed to goods in accordance with the mechanism established by the California Labor Code.

The basis for these lists was described in a notice in the California Regulatory Notice Registration on March 3, 2023.
In the IARC Human Carcinogenic Hazards Identification Report, the international cancer research organization IARC concluded that, based on sufficient evidence of animal carcinogenicity, 1,1,1-trichloroethane is "likely to cause cancer to humans" (Class 2A carcinogen), and leuco malachite green is "likely to cause cancer to humans" (Class 2B carcinogen).
1,1,1-trichloroethane is a volatile organic compound mainly used as a cleaning and degreasing agent; Dark peacock green is a dye commonly used in the manufacturing of dyes, coatings, and preservatives.
