The Health Promotion Agency (HPA) warned on Tuesday that individuals who bring heated tobacco products into Taiwan may be fined up to NT $5 million ($161186).

HPA stated in a statement that regardless of whether these products are intended for personal entertainment or purchased on behalf of others, fines will be imposed.

According to the revised Tobacco Hazard Prevention Act, which came into effect in March, new tobacco products, such as heated non combustible (HnB) or heated tobacco products (HTP) and their components required for use, are prohibited in Taiwan unless they are approved after a health risk assessment by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), as reported by Focus Taiwan.

HPA states that production or import can only be carried out with approval. According to the Health Promotion Agency, the Ministry of Health has not yet approved any HTP.

Liu Jiaxiu, an official from the Tobacco Control Department of the Health Bureau, stated that unauthorized manufacturing, importing, selling, supplying, displaying, advertising, or using designated tobacco products can result in a maximum fine of NT $50 million.

Liu said that those who bring heated tobacco products into the country will be fined NT $50000 to NT $5 million; Those who use heated tobacco products shall be fined NT $2000 to NT $10000.

Although Electronic cigarette products are prohibited, legislators said that heated cigarette products will be regulated.
